A Shopify product listing translated from English to Québec French, with a language toggle and a compliance shield

Quebec's Bill 96 asks more than most stores realize

Everything a Quebec customer can land on must be available in French, and the French can be no harder to reach than the English. Shopify's free translation gets you part of the way — but in France French, it leaves your policies untranslated, and it goes stale the moment you edit the English. Generic translators leave anglicisms and untranslated English that read as non-compliant — and careless — to your Quebec customers.

The policies gap

Refund, shipping, and terms are the highest-risk pages. Shopify translates its defaults — but the moment you edit them, the French falls behind and stays behind, and your own custom policy text it never translates at all.

France French ≠ Québec French

“Courriel,” not “email.” “Magasinage,” not “shopping.” Machine translation gets the dialect wrong in ways Quebec customers notice.

Silent drift

You translate everything — then add a product or edit a policy, and it's English-only again until someone notices.

The law is real, and rising — but this isn't about fear

Complaints to Quebec's language regulator hit a record ~10,371 in 2024–25, up roughly 140% over five years, with websites among the top objects. Penalties can reach thousands per day, and consumers can now act directly. Actual prosecutions stay rare — so the smart move isn't panic, it's removing a cheap-to-fix risk while serving your Quebec customers properly.

Questions merchants ask

Is Lexibond legal advice?

No. It's a tool to reduce compliance risk and effort — a positioning and monitoring aid, not legal advice or a certification. For a binding opinion, consult a lawyer.

What does “markedly predominant” mean for my store?

Less than you may have read. "Markedly predominant" is the rule for public signs and commercial advertising — French with a much greater visual impact, and since June 2025 also exterior signage that carries a non-French trademark. A website is commercial documentation under the OQLF's own guide for businesses: it must be available in French, and if you also publish another language, the French must be at least equivalent and no harder to reach. The practical safe reading: anything a Quebec customer can land on should be fully available in French.

Doesn't Shopify already translate my store?

Partly. Shopify's free Translate & Adapt auto-translates products, collections, pages and blog posts — up to two languages, in France French rather than Québec French. It doesn't translate your policies at all, and when you edit the English it leaves the old French in place until you re-run it. Lexibond adds what it lacks: Québec French with your brand terms enforced, policies and customer emails covered, a compliance score, and re-translation when your content changes.

Will it overwrite French I wrote or edited myself?

No. Lexibond never overwrites French you created — it only fills gaps and refreshes translations it made itself.

Do you support languages other than French?

Yes — choose from Spanish, German, Italian, and Portuguese, using the same engine, with your glossary applied per language. Core includes French plus one of them; Pro includes French plus two. French, with Bill 96 compliance, is the focus.
