Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 12, 2026
The short version: LocaleGuard does not collect, store, or process your customers' personal information. It works with your storefront content and its translations — not your shoppers' data.
LocaleGuard ("we", "us") is a Shopify app that checks and translates your storefront for French-language (Quebec Bill 96) compliance. This policy explains what data the app accesses, how we use it, and your choices. We built LocaleGuard in Quebec with privacy as a first-class concern (Law 25 / PIPEDA / GDPR).
1. Who this covers
Merchants who install LocaleGuard. The app has no consumer-facing component and never interacts with your shoppers.
2. What we access and store
With your authorization, Shopify grants the app access to your translatable storefront content (products, collections, pages, blog posts, store policies, theme text, navigation menus, and notification email templates), its existing translations and published locales, and a secure session token to call Shopify's API on your behalf.
Per store — shop-scoped and isolated from every other store — we store:
- Translation records — cryptographic hashes of source and translated text (to detect changes and avoid re-translating unchanged content), plus the translation provider/model used and, when the last write was a repair, which kind it was (quality or glossary). For these records we store hashes, not the text.
- Your glossary — the brand/term mappings you define.
- Your free quality sample — if you take the one free sample, we keep what it produced: the fields it used, your English text, and the French we generated — so you can come back and re-read the result without paying to run it again. This is storefront content you already publish, never shopper data, and it is deleted with everything else when you uninstall.
- Compliance data — your score history, freshness events, in-app alerts, and flagged untranslated-English findings (the word and where it was found, so a flagged issue isn't lost between checks).
- Usage counters — the number of fields translated, for fair-use and billing integrity, when we last reviewed a store's usage internally, and which languages you have asked us to translate into, so your plan's language allowance can be counted.
- Your store's domain and install date — so we know the app is installed, and so we're notified when a new store installs it.
We request only the Shopify scopes we need: read_products,
read_locales, read_translations, write_translations.
We do NOT access or store customer names, emails, addresses, orders,
carts, or payment information.
3. Content sent for translation
When you translate content — including the one free quality sample — the text of the fields being translated is sent to our AI translation provider to generate the French (or other-language) version. Paid translations are then written back to your Shopify store; the free sample is only displayed to you and is never written to your storefront. Either way this is storefront content you author — never shopper data.
4. Service providers (subprocessors)
- Shopify — the platform the app runs on and the system of record for your content and its translations.
- Anthropic (Claude) — the AI model that performs translations. Content sent for translation is processed only to generate the translation. Anthropic does not use API inputs or outputs to train its models, and deletes them within 7 days.
- DigitalOcean — cloud hosting for the app, in a Canadian (Toronto) data centre.
- Zoho — the email service behind support@localeguard.ca, hosted in Zoho's Canadian data centre. It handles any message you send us and our own internal notification that a new store has installed the app. We don't send you marketing email.
5. Where your data is stored
LocaleGuard's servers are located in Canada (Toronto). Your app data (see §2) stays there. Your storefront content and its translations are stored by Shopify under Shopify's own infrastructure and policies.
6. Retention & deletion
We keep your app data for as long as LocaleGuard is installed. When you
uninstall, Shopify sends us a shop-redaction request
(shop/redact, typically 48 hours after uninstall) and we delete your store's
data when we receive it. We honour Shopify's mandatory data-request and redaction webhooks
(customers/data_request, customers/redact,
shop/redact). Because we hold no customer personal information, customer
requests have nothing to disclose; the shop-redaction request deletes your store's records.
7. Your rights
Privacy laws such as Quebec's Law 25, Canada's PIPEDA, and the EU/UK GDPR grant data-subject rights (access, correction, deletion). Because LocaleGuard holds no shopper personal information, these are handled at the merchant level: you can delete all your app data at any time by uninstalling, or contact us at support@localeguard.ca.
8. Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). Access tokens are stored securely and used only to serve your store. We follow the principle of least privilege for Shopify API scopes.
9. This website (localeguard.ca)
Everything above concerns the Shopify app. This section is about the website you're reading right now.
- No cookies. This site sets none — there is nothing to consent to, which is why you aren't looking at a banner.
- No third-party analytics, no trackers, no advertising pixels. We don't load Google Analytics or any equivalent, so no third party learns that you visited.
- Server logs without IP addresses. Our web server keeps basic request records — the page requested, the referring site, browser type, response status and timestamp — to understand which pages are useful. The visitor's IP address is discarded before the record is written, and the logs stay on our own server in Toronto and are kept for a short rotation window.
- Search performance data. We use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, which report on those search engines' own data about how our pages appear in results. This requires no code on this site and gives us no information about you as an individual.
- The free Bill 96 self-check runs entirely in your browser. Your answers are never transmitted to us or stored anywhere.
10. Changes
We may update this policy; we'll change the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, note it in the app.
